What is RYLA?
Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) is a
program that provides outstanding youth leaders an
opportunity to expand and hone their leadership skills. RYLA is an
international program that was created by Rotary
International as a way to encourage strong leadership in youth. RYLA for Rotary District 5580 began
in 1992 with 27 participants and has since blossomed to well over 100 participants (RYLArians). The program
sponsored by District 5580
consists of a one week seminar called Camp RYLA that is held each July on the
University of Minnesota, Crookston
campus.
What do campers do at RYLA?

Camp RYLA is
a week of very intense leadership training. Campers (RYLArians) learn
about what it takes to be not just a leader but a good one. Outstanding speakers from all over the region, discussion groups,
and sessions
with volunteer Rotarian staff members are just a few of the sources for
individual development. Activities include daily interaction among camper
groups, challenging physical and mental activities, and fellowship with youth leader peers and Rotarians. Campers make friendships that last a
lifetime!
If I get
accepted, does Camp RYLA cost anything?
Camp RYLA is sponsored by local Rotary
clubs of District 5580 and Rotary International. It is staffed and operated
by volunteer Rotarians from District 5580 (includes clubs in North Dakota,
Northern Minnesota, northwest Wisconsin, and southwest Ontario) as well as by
former RYLArians. District 5580
is committed to sponsoring Camp RYLA as one of its outstanding youth projects.
Rotarians have noted the positive effects that RYLA has on its
participants, and this has led to a commitment to the RYLA
program. Individual Rotary clubs pay all of the fees for each
camper. RYLArians incur no costs for attending this week of intense
learning.
Who can
attend RYLA?
Rotary District 5580 is looking for
outstanding young leaders and potential leaders between the ages of 16 and 18
from area high schools to apply for Camp RYLA. Participants at Camp RYLA are typically about to enter their junior or senior year in high school
when they attend. We are seeking students with a good academic record and
involvement in school activities (athletics, fine arts, government, etc.) as well as non-school-related activities and work experience. Outstanding student leaders will be
chosen from applicants for a week of leadership training at Camp RYLA.
If you are a student or a parent
interested in RYLA, please contact your local Rotary club or school guidance
counselor.
